The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is an elegant, energetic breed compatible for city or country life.  Considered a "toy" breed by the American Kennel Club, Cavaliers get high marks in obedience and agility and make wonderful therapy dogs due to their sweet, gentle natures.

Named for King Charles II of Britain, the Cavalier was originally bred to be a companion and used to warm the laps of the aristocracy as they traveled at night by carriage.  A European court favorite as early as the 15th century, Cavaliers are often referred to as the "comforter spaniel", Their favorite place to be is with their family, either on a lap or by their side. Cavaliers have long been featured in the paintings of Gainsborough, Landseer, Van Dyck and more.

The Cavalier's' silky coat comes in four colors -- Blenheim (chestnut and white), Tricolor (black, white and tan), Ruby (solid red) and Black and Tan. Although the Cavalier can be slightly smaller or larger, the breed standard is between 12 and 13 inches tall at the shoulder and the weight is between 13 and 18 pounds.

This small spaniel is not only elegantly lovely, but intelligent as well, eager to please and learn.  Though Cavaliers have been used successfully in hunting small game, the breed's true purpose has always been that of trusty companions for children and thrives as part of a family.  The coat requires weekly brushing, but no trimming.
